Saint’s Island – A Personal Reflection and History

Explore Saint’s Island – A Personal Reflection and History

When I look back on my childhood, some of my fondest memories are of swimming at Saint’s Island in Newtowncashel, County Longford. Growing up near Saint’s Island was our summer playground, a place where we’d gather with friends and family, wade into the cool waters of Lough Ree, and spend long Sunday afternoons laughing and exploring. There was a sense of freedom and adventure, surrounded by nature and the quiet history of the island.

Saint’s Island is a tranquil spot on the edge of Lough Ree, connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. Its peaceful setting belies a rich history stretching back to the early Christian period. The island was once home to a monastery founded by Saint Kevin in the 6th century. The remains of the medieval church still stand, a testament to the island’s spiritual significance and its role as a sanctuary for monks and pilgrims over the centuries.

In medieval times, Saint’s Island was a place of retreat and reflection. Pilgrims would come seeking solace, and the island’s isolation made it an ideal setting for contemplation. Even today, the ruins and the landscape evoke a sense of reverence and connection to the past.

For locals, Saint’s Island is more than a historical site, it’s part of our community’s fabric. Families come to picnic, fish, and enjoy the views across Lough Ree. Wildlife abounds: swans glide across the water, herons hunt along the shore, and the air is filled with birdsong. For us, swimming at Saint’s Island was a rite of passage.
