Vision, Mission & Ethos

At Ethical Tours, our core values are sustainability, inclusivity, community, and integrity. We are committed to minimising our environmental impact, actively supporting local communities, and offering travel experiences that deepen the connection between people and nature.

Our mission is to inspire and empower visitors to explore Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands responsibly while fostering respect for our region’s rich heritage and natural beauty. We strive to set an example for regenerative tourism, making a positive contribution to our local environment and economy.

Our Definition of Sustainable Tourism

We adopt the UNWTO definition of sustainable tourism—tourism that “takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities”. Ethical Tours is dedicated to reducing negative impacts and maximising positive outcomes throughout our operations.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

We acknowledge that sustainability is a continual journey, and while we are proud of our progress, we always seek to improve. We regularly review our practices, set measurable goals, and listen to feedback from guests, staff, and partners as we work to leave a lasting positive legacy for future generations.

Environmental Impact Reduction

Energy Use
  • 80% of our energy requirements are met on site using solar power.
  • All e-bikes, e-mobility scooters, and our electric van are charged using renewable energy.
  • All appliances and lights are turned off when not in use; low-energy fixtures are installed where possible.
  • We monitor and review our energy consumption with the aim to further reduce use annually.
Water Conservation
  • Water use is tracked at our premises; we utilise an onsite well and promote refillable bottles for guests.
  • We encourage water conservation through staff training and guest information.
Waste Reduction
  • Ethical Tours enforces a strict zero single-use plastic policy; guests are encouraged to bring their own bottles, and reusable bottles are provided when needed.
  • All tour waste is collected, sorted, and either recycled or composted where possible.
  • We provide proper signage, bins, and education to reinforce responsible waste management.
  • We aim to reduce waste generation by 20% before the end of 2026.

Ethical Purchasing

  • We prioritise purchasing durable, reusable, locally sourced goods (within 50 km where possible).
  • Preference is given to goods and services that are recyclable, energy efficient, produced with minimal packaging, and manufactured under sound environmental and social standards.

Carbon Management

  • Our primary focus is on reduction—minimising waste and maximising energy and transport efficiency.
  • We are committed to measuring, reporting, and reducing our carbon footprint year on year

Responsible Sustainability Marketing

  • All promotional material is accurate, transparent, and honest, reflecting our genuine efforts and achievements.
  • We communicate progress and challenges openly and avoid greenwashing.
  • Our marketing is primarily digital to reduce paper and material waste.

Social Responsibility & Community Benefit

  • Ethical Tours collaborates with local businesses, producers, and activity providers, ensuring that economic benefits remain in the Longford region.
  • We offer experiences which connect guests to local culture, crafts, and food.
  • Staff regularly participate in local conservation, community clean-up, and awareness events.
  • We support community groups and initiatives aligned with environmental and social values.

Supporting Biodiversity & Conservation

  • Our routes and activities are designed to minimise disturbance to habitats.
  • We educate guests about local wildlife and the ecological significance of our region, incorporating the Leave No Trace principles on every tour.
